ORAL SURGERY (EXTRACTIONS)

I do most of the extractions and the minor soft tissue surgery on my regular patients. We calculate that we have done between seven to eight thousand extractions in our Albuquerque office. My assistant and I enjoy the challenge of oral surgery and feel that we can handle most extractions quite well. I send out some of my more difficult impacted wisdom teeth to the oral surgeon, but take care of nearly everything else.

We generally encourage our patients to take 400 to 600 milligrams of Ibuprofen (Advil) the night before surgery, and another dose an hour before treatment. A great deal of the time our surgery patients get by fine with more doses of Advil or Aleve following the extractions, and the ones that require prescription pain killers usually only need them for a day or two. We advise patients NOT to take much aspirin for a day or two before the surgery, as that sometimes thins the blood down to dangerous levels.
